Up Opt Out E-Mail WARNING!
CREDIT REPORTING INDUSTRY ONCE AGAIN WARNS CONSUMERS ABOUT FALSE E-MAIL Atlanta, April 16, 2003
Consumers are once again being advised by the credit reporting industry to be wary of a false e-mail circulating the Internet regarding the information handling practices of consumer credit reporting companies.
The false e-mail reads: "Just wanted to let everyone know who hasn't already heard, the four major credit bureaus in the U.S. will be allowed, starting July 1, to release your credit info, mailing addresses, phone numbers... to anyone who requests it. If you would like to "opt out" of this release of info., you can call 1-888-567-8688. It only takes a couple of minutes to do, and you can take care of anyone else in the household while making only one call, you'll just need their social security number."
Contrary to claims made in the e-mail, credit-reporting companies do not provide personal consumer data to "anyone who requests it. Federal law prohibits such a practice.
Consumer credit reports are only provided to legitimate businesses that have a permissible purpose under the law. Such permissible purposes typically involve the extension of credit, insurance, employment, or government benefit.
The toll-free number included in the e-mail is valid only for consumers who want to remove their names from mailing lists for pre-approved offers of credit lawfully generated by the major credit reporting companies. That opt-out number has been in effect and available to consumers since 1997.
The Consumer Data Industry Association issued three previous news releases noting the e-mail was false and misleading. Consumers can access the original release sent out in July of 2001 by clicking on "smia Room" at www.cdiaonline.org. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also issued a consumer alert in 2001 when this message first circulated to advise consumers. --Source: Consumer Data Industry Association, April 9, 2003
